Hims vs Keeps for Hair Loss: Prices, Terms, Clinicians

Hims and Keeps sell the same generic finasteride and minoxidil. They differ on how prices are shown, how you are billed, how long messaging lasts and how you leave.

Published Sep 20, 2026Prices and terms checked Sep 22, 2026

Hims and Keeps both sell generic finasteride and minoxidil online after a free review by a licensed provider, so the medicine is not the difference. The differences are in how each shows its price, how often it bills you, how long provider messaging lasts, how plainly it labels compounded products, and how you cancel.

On our published paperwork test Hims scored 7.2 and Keeps 7.0, close enough that the right choice depends on which of those differences matters to you. We read both services' pages, and Hims' terms, on 22 September 2026.

Price: which is cheaper?

For plain generic finasteride, Keeps is cheaper on a twelve-month plan and Hims is cheaper than Keeps' shorter plans, on the figures each prints. Hims lists finasteride starting at $22 a month; Keeps lists $26.67 on three months, $22.50 on six and $20 on twelve.

The catch is that Hims does not print a plan length beside its "starting at" price on the hair-loss page, while its own cost guide ties the $22 to a three-month supply. If that holds, three months of Hims finasteride is cheaper than three months at Keeps, and twelve months at Keeps is cheaper than twelve at Hims' starting rate. Check the checkout total at both before deciding.

Neither is the cheapest way to fill the prescription. Ro lists $16 a month on twelve months, and a generic prescription filled at a cash-price pharmacy costs less again; what finasteride costs works through every route.

Billing: per shipment or per interval

Keeps is explicit: its footnote says medicines are shipped and billed every 3, 6 or 12 months, so the three-month plan is an $80 charge and the twelve-month plan a single $240 charge. That is clear once read, but the page leads with the per-month figure.

Hims' terms say subscriptions renew automatically at the interval shown during checkout, that you see one total price, and that the first renewal may be charged early to prevent a gap. Both approaches are honest; both mean the number that leaves your account is not the monthly figure on the product page.

The clinicians and the consultation

Both use licensed providers and both call the consultation free. The order differs: Hims starts with a questionnaire and the provider recommends a treatment, while Keeps has you pick a plan and a provider confirms it.

Messaging is the other difference. Hims says access to the provider is unlimited at no extra cost; Keeps' products page says messaging is unlimited for one year. For most people on a long-running prescription, that year is the one that matters, but it is worth knowing. Our guide to what an online hair-loss consult asks you covers what either will ask.

Beyond finasteride: the two ranges

Hims sells the wider range. Besides finasteride it lists topical minoxidil serum from $15 a month and foam from $19, a medicated shampoo from $15, combination sprays, serums, pills and chews from $35 to $39, and a Hair Power Pack from $60. Keeps' list is shorter: minoxidil foam and solution, a finasteride-and-minoxidil plan that showed $130 on the three-month option, oral minoxidil, a ketoconazole shampoo, and newer chews, drops, a gel and a spray.

More choice is only useful if you need it. For ordinary pattern thinning, the plain generics are where both services start, and several of the combination products at either contain minoxidil taken by mouth, which Keeps itself describes as prescribed off-label. That is a prescriber's decision to make with you, not a basket to fill.

What neither page tells you

Some things you will only learn by asking. Hims' hair-loss page does not print the plan length behind each "starting at" price. Keeps' pages we read do not say whether you can send the prescription to another pharmacy. Neither publishes how quickly its providers answer messages, and neither says which pharmacy fills a given product until you are in the process.

Ask all three before you pay. A service that answers them plainly in a message before you commit is showing you how it will behave when you need it.

Compounded products

Hims prints, in bold on its hair-loss page, that its Hair Hybrids are compounded and that the FDA does not approve or verify them. Keeps calls its Minoxidil+ Spray compounded, but lists its finasteride-and-minoxidil chews, drops and gel on the product grid without the same plain label.

That gap is why Hims scored 14 of 15 on compounding labels and Keeps 9. It matters most for topical finasteride, which the FDA cautioned about in April 2025; read topical finasteride through telehealth before choosing a gel, spray or drop from either.

Cancelling

Hims' terms say you cancel in the app under "My Subscriptions", through the help centre or by phone, at least two days before renewal is processed, and that partly used periods are not refunded as a rule. Keeps' FAQ lists your account, an online request or a phone number, and asks you to phone if the next refill is due within 24 hours.

Because Keeps bills per shipment, missing a cancellation costs more at once: $80 on the three-month plan. Because Hims may charge the first renewal early, the date you remember may not be the date it charges. Either way, set a reminder the day you sign up; how to cancel a hair-loss subscription has every service's steps.

Insurance and paying

Neither takes insurance. Hims' terms say it and its medical groups are not enrolled with Medicare, Medicaid or commercial insurers, and Keeps' FAQ says its treatments are not covered. Hims' terms also say it may offer payment through Klarna, with repayment amounts and any interest or fees set by Klarna, which can raise the total you owe.

For a medicine that costs tens of dollars a month, paying in instalments rarely makes sense. If a subscription only feels affordable spread out, the cheaper routes in our cost guide are worth a second look.

Which to choose

Choose Keeps if you want plain generic finasteride or minoxidil, are happy to commit to twelve months for the lowest per-month price, and like knowing exactly how often you are charged. Choose Hims if you want a wider range, including combination products your clinician may suggest, and value messaging with no one-year limit.

Choose neither, and use your own doctor and a pharmacy, if you already have a doctor you can see; that route is cheaper and pays us nothing. The other three services are scored on our online hair-loss services compared page, and our Hims hair-loss review goes deeper on Hims' terms.

Hims vs Keeps questions

Is Hims or Keeps cheaper?
On listed prices, Keeps' twelve-month plan at $20 a month is cheaper than Hims' starting $22, and Hims' starting price is below Keeps' three-month $26.67. Check the total at checkout, because Hims does not print a plan length beside its price.
Do Hims and Keeps use real doctors?
Both say a licensed provider reviews your consultation. Neither promises a physician specifically on the pages we read; the clinician may be a doctor or another licensed prescriber.
Which has better customer support, Hims or Keeps?
We can only compare what each publishes: Hims says provider access is unlimited at no extra cost, and Keeps says messaging is unlimited for one year. We did not test response times.
Can I switch from Keeps to Hims?
Yes. Cancel one before its renewal or refill date, then start a new consultation with the other. The new service will ask what you take already, so have your current prescription to hand.
