Hims hair-loss review: what the prices and the terms actually say

Hims is the biggest name in online hair-loss treatment, and its pages are built to get you to a consultation fast. We read its hair-loss pages, its own cost guide and its terms of service on 22 September 2026, and set out what you pay, who reviews you and how you leave.

This page has marked partner links. If you sign up through one, the service may pay us; that money never moves a score, and the top-scoring service here pays us nothing. How we are paid

On this page

Hims is a telehealth service that sells prescription and non-prescription hair-loss products on subscription after an online review by a licensed provider. It does not make its own medicines work better than anyone else's: its finasteride and minoxidil are the same generic molecules a pharmacy sells, so this Hims hair-loss review judges the service around them — price, clinician, compounding and the way out.

Does Hims work for hair loss?

Hims works in the sense that it can get you a genuine prescription for finasteride or minoxidil products; whether those medicines help your hair depends on the medicine and on you, not on the brand. Finasteride's own FDA label says benefit generally takes three months or more to appear and that the drug is for men only.

Hims' hair-loss page quotes a long-term study in which finasteride reduced hair loss or increased regrowth in more than 90% of participants, and says topical minoxidil helps about half of men who use it consistently. Those are Hims' summaries of other people's research, not results Hims measured, and the page labels its customer stories as paid testimonials whose results have not been independently verified. Read the percentages as marketing citing a study, then ask the clinician what applies to you.

What Hims sells for hair loss, and the prices

Hims lists its hair-loss range with a "starting at" monthly price for each product. The table repeats them as Hims printed them on 22 September 2026; the type column is our plain description.

Hims hair-loss products and their "starting at" monthly prices (hims.com, read 22 September 2026)
Product (as Hims names it)Starting at, per monthWhat it is
Minoxidil Serum$15Topical minoxidil
Dandruff Detox Shampoo$15Medicated shampoo
Minoxidil Foam$19Topical minoxidil
Finasteride$22Generic finasteride tablet, prescription only
Rx Hair Loss Spray$35Finasteride and minoxidil spray, prescription
Rx Hair Loss Serum$35Prescription serum
Finasteride & Minoxidil + Supplement Blend Pill$35Prescription combination pill
Finasteride & Minoxidil + Supplement Blend Chew$35Prescription combination chew
Minoxidil + Supplement Blend Chew$35Prescription chew containing minoxidil
Rx Hair Loss Spray + Ketoconazole + Biotin$39Prescription spray bundle
Hair Power Pack$60Bundle of several products

The catch is the phrase "starting at". Hims' own finasteride cost guide describes the $22 as the monthly rate on a three-month supply, but the hair-loss page does not print a plan length beside any price. Hims' terms say you see a single total subscription price at checkout, and that the first renewal may be charged early to avoid a gap in treatment. Check that total, and the interval, before you confirm.

Three of the products above contain minoxidil taken by mouth. Oral minoxidil is a blood-pressure medicine; Ro and Keeps both say on their own pages that it is prescribed off-label for hair loss, which makes it a prescriber's decision and not a menu choice. Hims' topical minoxidil, by contrast, is the same active ingredient as the Rogaine sold over the counter.

How the Hims consultation works

The Hims consultation is a questionnaire about your hair and health, reviewed by a licensed provider who recommends a treatment or tells you it is not right for you. Hims calls it a free consultation; if something is prescribed, it ships free, and you can message the provider afterwards at no extra cost.

The terms add the structure behind it. Hims says it is not a healthcare provider: the clinicians belong to separate medical groups, and prescriptions are filled by pharmacies Hims names in its terms. The price you pay covers the platform, the pharmacy and the medical group together. Hims and its medical groups are not enrolled with Medicare, Medicaid or commercial insurers, so everything is cash-pay.

What the consultation cannot do is examine you. If your hair loss is patchy, sudden or itchy, see a doctor in person first; our guide to what an online hair-loss consult asks you explains where a questionnaire stops.

The terms: renewal, cancelling, refunds, arbitration

Hims' terms of service, last updated 31 August 2026, are specific about subscriptions. Four clauses matter to a hair-loss subscriber.

  1. Renewal: subscriptions renew automatically at the interval shown at checkout until you cancel, and the first renewal may be charged early.
  2. Cancelling: cancel in the app under "My Subscriptions", through the help centre, or by phone, at least two days before the renewal is processed. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current period.
  3. Refunds: partly used subscription periods are not refunded as a rule, though Hims may refund case by case.
  4. Disputes: disputes go to binding individual arbitration, and you give up class actions, unless you post a signed opt-out notice within 30 days of first agreeing to the terms.

None of this is unusual for a subscription, but the two-day notice and the early first renewal catch people out. Put the renewal date in your calendar on the day you sign up; our guide on how to cancel a hair-loss subscription has the steps for every service.

Compounded Hair Hybrids

Hims' hair-loss page states in bold that its Hair Hybrids are compounded products and that the FDA does not approve or verify their safety, effectiveness or quality. That is the honest disclosure, and more than some competitors print.

It matters because several of Hims' combination products put finasteride on the scalp. On 22 April 2025 the FDA warned that there is no FDA-approved topical finasteride and that it had received adverse-event reports about compounded topical versions, most of which described effects that persisted after people stopped. If a clinician suggests a spray or serum with finasteride in it, ask about those reports before it ships; our explainer on topical finasteride through telehealth sets out what the FDA said.

Hims versus filling a generic prescription yourself

For plain generic finasteride, Hims' "starting at $22 per month" is in the same band as its rivals: Ro lists $20 on its quarterly plan and Keeps $26.67 on three months. Filling a prescription from your own doctor at a cash-price pharmacy is usually far cheaper, but it needs the doctor first.

Hims' terms mention subscribers who choose to fill a prescription with a pharmacy other than Hims' own, so the option exists; ask the provider for it if you would rather pay a pharmacy directly. We compare every route, with the arithmetic, in what finasteride costs, and the service-by-service picture is in our online hair-loss services compared page.

Who Hims suits, and who it doesn't

Hims suits a man with ordinary pattern thinning who has no doctor he can see soon, wants the medicine posted, and will read the checkout page for the plan length and the renewal date. Its range is wide, so it also suits someone whose clinician wants to try a combination product, provided they discuss the compounding caution first.

It suits less well anyone who already has a GP or dermatologist, anyone whose hair loss is unusual or fast, and anyone who dislikes arbitration clauses. Women looking for the same kind of service are better served elsewhere, because finasteride's label is for men only. If you are weighing Hims against its nearest rival, read Hims vs Keeps.

Hims hair-loss questions

How much does Hims cost for hair loss?
Hims lists finasteride starting at $22 a month, topical minoxidil serum from $15 and foam from $19, and combination sprays, serums, pills and chews from $35 to $39 a month, with a Hair Power Pack from $60. The page does not show which plan length each "starting at" price needs, so check the total and the interval at checkout.
Is Hims minoxidil the same as Rogaine?
Hims' topical minoxidil contains the same active ingredient as Rogaine, which is sold without a prescription in the US. The difference is the price, the packaging and whether you want it bundled into a subscription.
Can you cancel Hims at any time?
Yes. Hims' terms let you cancel in the app, through its help centre or by phone, but you must do it at least two days before the renewal is processed, and it takes effect at the end of the period you have paid for.
Is Hims legit?
Hims is run by Hims & Hers Health, and its prescriptions come from licensed providers in separate medical groups and are filled by named pharmacies. Legitimate is not the same as right for you: the consultation is a questionnaire, not an examination.
Does Hims take insurance?
No. Hims' terms say it and its medical groups are not enrolled with Medicare, Medicaid or commercial insurers, so you pay cash for the service and the medicine.
